A taste of Down Under came to Big River in July of 2004 in the form of a gift store with a difference, owned and operated by a true blue Aussie Sheila (that's Australian for "girl"), Anita Turgeon.

Anita came to Canada several years ago after being introduced to the man who is now her Canadian husband by their mutual friends.

Kangaroo Cottage is surrounded by views of Cowan Lake. During the summer of 2005, Kangaroo Cottage will be expanding to include The Billabong Coffee House, which features a deck where you can come and relax and enjoy the view with a specialty coffee or cold beverage of your choice.

Kangaroo Cottage is the place to find that something special, something a bit different and unique. Browsing is encouraged.

Items Anita brings in from Australia include Jacaru Kangaroo leather hats and ball caps, both for ladies and men. Most of these hats can take a fair beating; they are crushable, durable and true to their origin, "bounce" back into shape.

Another item that has taken off in a huge way is Australian licorice, so soft it melts in your mouth. Other selections include wool blend socks and medicinal honeys from New Zealand. Soon to be introduced to Kangaroo Cottage is a selection of Aussie tee-shirts depicting the great white shark, kangaroos, koalas, crocodiles and much more.

Anita also stocks 100% bees wax candles, and a range of skin care products based on emu oils.

Kangaroo Cottage is situated on Main Street in Big River, towards the dock. So hop on down and make yourself at home in Anita's relaxed atmosphere, wander through the store, and experience a bit of Down Under.

As they say in Australia, "See ya 'round the ridges!"
