Timber Trails Sno Riders
Timber Trails Sno Riders snowmobile club is very active part in the sport of snowmobiling. The club belongs to the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association and the Forest Fringe Snowmobile Trail Association, two organizations that have as their main goal safe, fun family snowmobiling in our province. That too is the goal of Timber Trails Sno Riders.
The club sponsors a Safety Training Program for young riders 12 to 15 years of age. This is an excellent one-day hands-on training session for young riders and once they have taken the course they receive a certificate permitting them to operate their snowmobiles in the company of a person who holds a valid drivers' license.
The snowmobile club has been active since the winter of 1987/88 and was incorporated as a non-profit co-operative in 1993. By that time various volunteers had done extensive groundwork to establish a system of marked and signed snowmobile trails that would interlink communities across the entire province of Saskatchewan and eventually link up with a trail system that would extend across Canada.
The Big River community worked diligently to be part of this undertaking and was instrumental in securing the route so that it traveled into north central Saskatchewan and Big River would be one of the key communities situated on it.
The main trail system is part of the Trans-Canadian Snowmobile Trail that, in Saskatchewan, extends from the Manitoba border to the Alberta border. The 73 km section of this trail the club maintains is #115A, which extends south of Big River to Debden and west of Big River to the junction with Leoville.
Because of these interconnecting trails snowmobilers can ride their snowmobiles from the southern Manitoba border to Cold Lake, Alberta, all on groomed, signed snowmobile trails.
The club also maintains and grooms approximately 127 km of local club trails and the area has unlimited natural trails and powder riding for the more adventurous. The trails are signed following the provincial snowmobile guidelines, so that everyone who rides in the area knows that they are on the club's trails and know where they are going.
The Sno Riders also provide two warm-up shelters for everyone to use when out riding. There are fire pits outside, stoves inside and outdoor bathrooms. Trails are groomed as often as funds permit.
Club memberships are sold by the club to help with the costs of signs, maintaining the shelters, and the costs of operating and maintaining the groomer. Unpaid volunteers do all the trail maintenance, look after signage and operate the groomer.
The club has a Bombardier SV250 groomer with 10-foot wide drag that is used to groom the trails. The trails are groomed up to 16 feet wide, except for a few areas where there is not enough width.
Timber Trails Sno Riders host an annual Snowmobile Rally on the second Saturday of February each year. Click to read more about the annual rally.
